Isla Cristina - a 'real' Spanish fishing town

To the east of Ayamonte is the resort of Isla Cristina, noted for its marvellous choice of sandy, extensive beaches making stretching for eight kilometres. There are some excellent windsurfing spots along this coast. The town's population explodes in July and August due to an influx of Spanish tourists, mainly from Seville. Visit at this time if you like a lively atmosphere with restaurant seating on pavements and plazas full of Spanish 'family nightlife'. There are also bars and nightclubs in the port area.

The Beaches

Isla Cristina boasts a number of superb beaches. A walk along Carretera de la Playa , with it's pine trees and mammoth eucalyptus trees, will bring you to the Playa de la Casita Azul with it's surround of these indigenous trees (these pines are an important habitat for endangered chameleon). The 'Blue Flag' Playa Central is possibly the most 'urbanised' with a paved seafront, a number of the 'Chiringuitos', small beach restaurants/bars, and facilities such as showers, public toilets etc, including facilities for the disabled. Most of the beaches have some of these facilities, as well as lifeguards during the summer months.

As you move up towards the adjacent resort of Islantilla you will find numerous sporting facilities, including its international standard 27-hole course which has previously been the venue for the PGA Spanish Open and a number of Spanish national tournaments.
