The highly prized beaches are very safe with a sandbank out to sea where “almejas” (mussels) can be fished; these provide an ideal sheltered location for people learning to kitesurf and windsurf - they are regularly used by expert kitesurfers for instruction, and for their own enjoyment. There are several wind and kitesufing schools on the beach during the months of July and August, with lifeboats at hand. It is also possible to hire boats. It is helpful if you have some experience, as well as navigation licences for larger sailing and motor boats. The marinas in this area are truly superb, both Ayamonte and Isla Cristina being to a ' Blue Flag ' standard. And if you are looking to learn, there are a number of sailing schools in the area (for example, the Faro Sailing School , based in the marina at Ayamonte) who offer a full range of sailing courses year round.
